Can a cracked leather steering wheel be restored without replacing it?
Yes. A steering wheel with cracked or lifted leather doesn't need replacing: it gets decontaminated, hand sanded, given a special primer, painted, varnished and heat-sealed. At GSM we just did this on a Volkswagen Polo at our workshop in Vilobí del Penedès: 80 € + VAT (96.80 € with VAT), the price Gerard set on 12 October 2026. Real before-and-after photos a little further down.
💰 Why this matters before you sell or value the car
The steering wheel is the first thing you touch when you sit in a car, before you even start the engine. If it's cracked or the leather is lifted, it gives the impression of a neglected car even if the engine is perfect — it's the first thing anyone notices when they sit in a car at our workshop in Vilobí del Penedès.
That matters at two very specific moments:
- If you're selling the car yourself, a buyer who sees a wheel like that already starts thinking about negotiating the price down, even if the real problem is only cosmetic.
- If you bring it in for a valuation, what's seen on opening the door shapes the valuer's first impression, even before looking at the engine.
You're not replacing an entire part: you're restoring the one you already have, with the same care we put into every car we service at our workshop in Vilobí del Penedès.
🛠️ Does the whole steering wheel need replacing? The 4 steps
No. The leather it already has is restored at our workshop in Vilobí del Penedès, following the same four steps shown in the drawing above. The wheel isn't fully stripped down and the airbag isn't touched.
🚗 The real case: a Volkswagen Polo from our workshop

The photos are of a Volkswagen Polo that came through our workshop in Vilobí del Penedès. In the first, the wheel has cracked, lifted leather at the bottom, with visible wear marks around the VW badge.
In the second, after the process, the leather is uniform and crack-free. There's no need to re-cover the wheel. No need to replace it entirely, strip it down fully, or touch the airbag. It's a localised repair to this Volkswagen Polo's leather, not a new part.
Where is the steering wheel restoration done? At the GSM workshop, Camí de Bellver 83, Masia Cal Sabaret, 08735 Vilobí del Penedès (Barcelona, Spain).
💶 How much does it cost to restore a cracked leather steering wheel?
At GSM, 80 € + VAT (96.80 € with VAT) when there are cracks and the leather is lifted, as on this Volkswagen Polo. That's the price Gerard set on 12 October 2026, the same day as the video of this case.
If your wheel has only lost its colour, with no cracks, the quote can be lower: message us on 636 92 40 68 and we'll tell you which applies once we've seen it, before we start.
