Is a car with a B sticker a money pit? It depends how often you drive into Barcelona
A B sticker costs you zero days of restriction today and saves you 7.000 €: that is the gap between the SEAT Ibiza with a B that we have at 4.990 € and the Opel Corsa with a C at 11.990 €. A B sticker gets into the Barcelona ZBE Rondes, because the restriction targets cars with no sticker at all. And there is no ZBE anywhere in the Alt Penedès. What you do need to know before signing is what happens in 2028, and it is written out in full here.
How many days a year does a B sticker actually stop you?
None.
With a B sticker you get into the Barcelona ZBE Rondes today without asking permission, without signing up to any register and without paying anything. The restriction targets vehicles with no environmental sticker, and a B-rated car has one. The zone is live Monday to Friday on working days, from 7 am to 8 pm. On a Saturday, a Sunday or a Tuesday at nine at night there is no restriction on anyone.
And there is a detail almost nobody knows: the ring roads themselves are outside it. You can drive the Ronda de Dalt and the Ronda Litoral, and what is closed to cars with no sticker are the exits that feed straight into the zone.
The panel above is the whole sum: 7.000 € of difference against zero days of restriction.
How much do you save buying a car with a B sticker?
Seven thousand euros, with the two cars we have right now in Vilobí del Penedès. The SEAT Ibiza FR 1.9 TDI with 130 hp, from 2008 and carrying a B, is 4.990 €; the 2020 Opel Corsa with a C is 11.990 €.
The Ibiza has 282.000 km on it and we are not going to hide that from you. It also has a fresh service and the glow plugs replaced. The timing belt was changed at 240.000 km. The tyres are at 80 % on 17-inch alloys and the roadworthiness test is valid until 2027. It has been fully resprayed, FR trim, with a leather multifunction steering wheel and a manual gearbox. The 1.9 TDI drops under 6 litres per hundred combined and under 5 on the motorway.
Those 7.000 € are not a discount: they are the gap between two cars that do the same run around the Penedès.
And what is coming in 2028?
There is a date written in an official bulletin and it is not a press rumour. Decret 132/2024 of the Generalitat, published in DOGC number 9223 on 9 August 2024, says in article 21.1.a.2 that before 1 January 2028 the low emission zones of municipalities above 50.000 inhabitants have to bring B-rated vehicles into their restrictions. Barcelona is in that group.
Now the nuance that changes everything. That decree binds town halls and not drivers: the actual ban somebody gets fined under comes from the municipal ordinance, which is what sets the perimeter, the hours and the exemptions. Barcelona's is from October 2022 and still says nothing about the B sticker.
Anyone giving you an exact date for your car today is making it up.
Who should not buy a car with a B sticker?
If you drive inside the Barcelona Rondes every day for work, do not buy the Ibiza. Buy the 11.990 € Opel Corsa, which carries a C.
We are the ones telling you, and we are the ones losing the 4.990 € sale. A car is not cheap if it forces you to replace it in two years. And if that is your case and you want to sleep soundly, the 0 sticker on the 16.990 € Peugeot e-208 will not give you any surprises.
For everyone else, which is almost everyone in the Alt Penedès, a B does not limit you at all today.
Is there a ZBE in Vilafranca del Penedès or in the comarca?
There is none.
Not in Vilobí del Penedès, not in Vilafranca, not in Sant Sadurní d'Anoia. Decret 132/2024 requires a low emission zone in municipalities above 50.000 inhabitants, and Vilafranca, the largest in the comarca, had 42.561 in 2025. Vilobí del Penedès has 1.157 and the whole Alt Penedès adds up to 116.098. The decree has a second limb for municipalities above 20.000 inhabitants sitting in zones where the limit values are exceeded, and that list is in an annex we could not open: which is why we do not tell you Vilafranca is exempt by law, only that it has no ZBE today.
For day-to-day life in the comarca the sticker does not limit you: from our workshop to Vilafranca is 8,1 km, to Sant Martí Sarroca 4,2 and to les Cabanyes 4,5. Where it starts to matter is the day you drive down to Barcelona.
What is the difference between a B sticker and a C?
The line is drawn by the DGT and it sits on the registration date. The C covers petrol cars registered from January 2006 and diesels from September 2015; the B, petrol from 1 January 2001 and diesels from 2006.
Diesels are where everyone gets confused. A 2008 diesel carries a B and a 2016 one carries a C. Eight years apart and two different letters.
Finding out which sticker yours gets is free: you put the plate into the DGT website and it tells you. The physical sticker costs 5 € at the post office.
